Kayne West’s HBO program canned for being ‘too hardcore’

Rapper Kanye West’s long-rumored HBO show doesn’t look like it will be seen anytime soon.

The project, which is headed by “Curb Your Enthusiasm” writer Larry Charles, was recently said to be shelved by execs that felt the show might have been a little too “hardcore” for the network.

The show was said to be about a day in the life of the Grammy winning rap artist, somewhat like the Larry David show “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” with its improvised situations and humor. West claims to be the “Black Larry David,” and was said by Charles to actually be incredibly funny behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look as though we will be seeing the show in the near future. Charles recently spoke to ComingSoon.net saying “HBO doesn’t have a good track record when it comes to black shows, and I felt like that may have had something to do with it.” Charles also went on to explain that HBO has recently come under some new management that may not have been ready for the type of show he could deliver.

A gut feeling tells me that this show could have been one of HBO’s biggest disasters.

West makes great music here and there, but has hardly ever shown his “funny” side in public. Frankly, he has seemed to be anything but funny, with his larger-than-life ego and his inability to ever look like anything other than a suave ladies man while out on the town.

The difference between West and David is that David is exactly who he plays on TV and that’s why “Curb” works so well. Proof of this also comes from the fact that his inspiration for George on “Seinfeld” came from his own life experiences.

Larry David is a neurotic, self-involved man-child that can get even the most humorless to crack a smile.

Could Kanye West ever deliver the same kind of humor?

It seems pretty unlikely, but now we may never know. We will all have to wait for future HBO seasons to see if they will ever take it off the shelf, dust it off and let us see for ourselves.
