Thunder Continues to Boom at Box Office

By KYLE SPENCER

Here we are, stuck in the gray area between great summer blockbusters and our favorite fall flicks.

It was a slow weekend at the box office, but “Tropic Thunder” managed to maintain its position at No. 1 for its second weekend. Two of this weekend’s new releases managed to squeeze into second and third place, while everyone’s favorite summer hit “The Dark Knight,” fell to fourth, but still brought in over $10.3 million for a running total of nearly $490 million in the U.S. alone.

“Tropic Thunder,” starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black, was welcomed by mixed reviews on its release two weeks ago. The film, however, continues to hold first place grossing $16.1 million this weekend.

Coming in at a close second, “The House Bunny,” starring Anna Faris and Colin Hanks brings in $15.1 million for its first weekend. Jason Statham’s new action flick, “Death Race,” takes third place with roughly $12.3 million.

Also debuting this weekend, “The Rocker,” starring Rainn Wilson, didn’t even manage to place in the Top 10, bringing in a mere $2.75 million in 12th place.

“The Rocker” apparently doesn’t rock, “The House Bunny” brings home silver, and “Tropic Thunder” still booms at the box office.

Until we begin to see the higher quality films of the fall and winter seasons, I suspect to see lagging box office results like these for a couple more months.
