Questions remain on the horizon

NIU’s men’s tennis team is facing the end of their fall schedule, and coach Tim Madden still has questions he wants answered.

He’ll be looking for those answers as the Huskies participate in the Indiana University Midwest Regional Classic today through Sunday.

“This is our last fall meet as a team and we’ve got to answer some specific questions,” said Madden. “Obviously, it’s great experience facing the region’s best opponents, but we also need to get some wins to boost our confidence and to find our most effective doubles combinations.”

One person that Madden doesn’t really need to worry about is freshman singles player Sunu Thomas. Thomas owns one of the team’s better won-lost records, sporting a 7-4 record to date. Both Thomas and junior Marty Engel earned splits in action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Pre-Qualification Tournament.

The Huskies will go up against some big names in the Indiana tournament. Among the Big Ten entries are the Universities of Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa, Michigan State University, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, and the University of Wisconsin. Representatives of the Mid-American Conference include Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio, and the University of Toledo. Rounding out the field with the Huskies will be Butler University, the University of Cincinnati, and Marquette University.
