Huskies bite the Salukis in tennis matchup

By JON LEVANICH

Looking to rebound from a loss to DePaul, the NIU men’s tennis team dominated Southern Illinois, keeping some impressive streaks alive in a 7-0 victory in Rockford.

“I felt we played very well,” NIU head coach Pontus Hiort said. “We hadn’t beaten SIU in a few years, so it was a good win.”

Junior Brian Livingston led the Huskie charge, with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Lucas Waked in the No. 1 singles match. The victory improved Livingston’s current win streak to nine straight matches.

NIU’s No. 2 doubles team of Alex Friesen and Jimmy Chu remained unbeaten during the spring season with an 8-6 win. The duo pushed their winning streak to 11 matches.

Friesen also extended his solo winning streak at No. 2 singles to eight straight with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over SIU’s Hugo Vidal.

“All three have played well all year long,” Hiort said. “I feel confident they will continue to do the right things and elevate their play going into the last month of the season.”

The Huskies (7-4) take the court next against Buffalo on April 5 in their spring MAC opener.

Unpleasant decisions

The road continues to be a challenging place for the NIU women’s tennis team. The Huskies dropped contests against Western Michigan on Friday and Bowling Green on Saturday by 7-0 decisions.

The Huskies tried to compete against WMU, with No. 5 singles Jenny Edner and No. 6 singles Dora Delgadillo falling in tie breakers.

NIU (3-9 overall, 1-3 MAC) continued to fight close matches against Bowling Green, but again fell short and was unable to muster up a victory in the setback on Saturday.

Rounding it up

Rain forced the cancellation of the final round of the Hoosier Invitational at Indiana University.

The NIU men’s golf team finished 14th overall in the tournament, shooting 41 stokes over par. Eastern Kentucky took first in the invitational with a team score of plus-14.

Huskie senior Zach Jecklin posted the best score for NIU, with a two-round total of 147, placing him in a tie for 12th. The score left the senior five shots above par.

Jecklin finished eight strokes behind leader Jesse Massie of EKU. Massie finished the tournament at three under.

Spring training

The NIU men’s and women’s soccer teams opened their spring campaigns over the weekend.

The men’s team opened in a triangular against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Bradley, an Elite 8 team from 2007. The Huskies tied UW-Green Bay 1-1 and beat Bradley 1-0. NIU continues its spring play against Notre Dame on April 5.

The women’s team started the spring with a home match against University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Huskies will play in a triangular Saturday against Northwestern and DePaul at Loyola University.
