Men’s tennis blanks Chicago State in MAC match

With its final MAC regular season match this weekend against Western Michigan University, the NIU men’s tennis team wasted little time proving its readiness.

The Huskies dominated non-conference opponent Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Thursday afternoon, 7-0 outdoors at the Huskie Tennis Courts.

“We played well today,” NIU coach Pontus Hiort said. “We played inside yesterday and then [outside] today. It can be a challenge switching, but we handled it well.”

The Huskies (10-6 overall, 2-2 MAC) were led by strong doubles play, along with junior Brian Livingston. Livingston extended his winning streak at No. 1 singles to 14 straight with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over IPFW’s (11-15) Nathan Jones.

For the second straight day, NIU swept through the doubles matches. This was an area that had plagued the team during two recent matches, in which the Huskies lost 4-3 because of the doubles point.

“We played really well in doubles to start the day,” Hiort said. “We played good outdoor tennis. We played very consistent.”

The No. 2 doubles team of Alex Friesen and Jimmy Chu won their match 8-2 over the Mastodons’ Hermann Kuschke and Renan Constantino. This was their second-straight victory after having a 13-match winning streak ended against Toledo last weekend.

The Huskies won the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches 8-2 and 8-4, respectively.

NIU will take the courts again at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Western Michigan (17-7, 4-0).

Hiort considered the last two wins a good tune-up for what he considers will be the Huskies toughest conference opponent of the year.

“It’s nice to have back-to-back wins going into the Western Michigan match,” Hiort said.
