Peters to throw first pitch at White Sox home opener

NIU President John Peters will throw out the first pitch at the White Sox’s home opener today.

The ceremonial first pitch is one of the ways the White Sox are honoring the victims of the Feb. 14 shootings.

“The White Sox will also be hosting the families of the victims in a suite for the game,” said Brandi Hephner LaBanc, assistant vice president for Planning and Operations at NIU.

The White Sox will also have a moment of silence before the game to remember everyone who has passed away from the organization during the year. However, this year, there will be a special emphasis for those lives lost in the shootings at NIU.

The White Sox previously honored the victims of the Feb. 14 shootings by wearing NIU hats in their spring training opener. The White Sox then auctioned off these hats and donated the money to the February 14 Student Scholarship Fund.

The White Sox also will host a special NIU baseball game at U.S. Cellular Field at 7 p.m. April 16. The Huskies will face Notre Dame.
