DeKalb Board of Education looks ahead to possible construction

The DeKalb Board of Education Tuesday approved the hiring of a general contractor and district building liaison for construction projects in the district.

The $110 million referendum was passed in February to fund expansions and a new high school in the district.

The district’s Facilities Planning Committee recommended the use of a general contractor.

The general contractor bids out different projects to subcontractors and makes sure things get done on time and under budget, said Russ Fletcher, staff and community relations liaison for the DeKalb School District.

The bid parameters for the general contractor may be announced at the April 15 meeting.

The district building liaison’s role is to represent the interests of the district and the communication with the general contractor, as well as oversee the work being performed by the general contractor and the subcontractors, Fletcher said.

Interviews are in progress for the district building liaison position and the person hired should be announced at the April 15 meeting.

Fletcher ensured the district will still keep other aspects of the project in mind.

“The district will continue to work closely with the district architect to make sure the projects proceed in a timely manner and under budget,” Fletcher said. “We will ensure that the taxpayers’ money is invested wisely and efficiently in these two very important projects.”
