DeKALB | What do Hurricane Katrina, backyard wrestling, Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and the intricate river systems of New Zealand have in common? They’re all the subjects of various films being screened at this year’s Reality Bytes Student Documentary Film Festival.

The festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday, features more than 20 student-produced documentaries on a myriad of subjects. The event is sponsored by the Department of Communication, and cash prizes will be awarded for the first, second and third place films. After the screenings from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Jack Arends Hall, Visual and Performing Arts Building, Room 100, the audience will be allowed to vote for a “Fan Favorite” pick. The awards will be announced after the screenings on Saturday.

At 10 p.m. Thursday, The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, will host a sneak-peek screening of four documentaries: “Night Visions” by Kathy Huang of Stanford University; “Fight Like Hell” by Jamie Shenk and Dean Ho of the University of Michigan; “Bramblitt” by Mike Ferris of the University of North Texas; and “Broken Glass: The Crystal Meth Explosion” by Jennah Trochia of Rowan University. “Night Visions” and “Fight Like Hell” will be shown again at Friday’s screening, “Bramblitt” and “Broken Glass” will be replayed on Saturday.
