DeKALB | It doesn’t get much better than this.

The NIU baseball team pulled out the brooms and swept the visiting Ohio Bobcats 6-4, 5-4 and 7-2 in a three-game series this weekend at Ralph McKinzie Field.

“Winning today was absolutely huge,” said head coach Ed Mathey. “We always talk about how important it is to defend your home turf, and series sweeps are hard to come by in this league.”

NIU (11-7, 3-0) came into the series averaging eight runs a game, but pitching and timely hitting propelled the Huskies to grind out a series sweep over Ohio (9-10, 0-3).

Junior pitcher Trevor Feeney stole the show in the first game of the series with a five-hit, three-earned-run, complete-game performance to lead the Huskies to a 6-4 win on a foggy Friday afternoon. The right-hander set down nine straight at one point in the game and only had one walk, which didn’t come until the ninth inning.

“I was getting ahead [in the count],” Feeney said. “Overall, I’m pleased with the performance.”

A bases-loaded walk to shortstop Bobby Stevens in the bottom of the 10th inning plated Justin Behm to give the Huskies a dramatic 5-4 victory in Saturday’s affair. Brandon Copp threw six solid innings of work, scattering five hits and giving up one earned run. Behm came off the bench in the eighth inning and came up with two crucial hits in his only two at bat.

“When you come off the bench, you do whatever you can to get on base and help your team out in any way,” Behm said.

Loud and exuberant Huskie fans were out in full force in Sunday’s windy, sun-splashed affair. With two outs and the bases loaded, junior Danny Reed lined a 1-2 pitch up the middle to score two runs and give the Huskies a comfortable 5-2 lead.

“I was just looking to get a hit,” Reed said. “The pitcher just missed getting it by a couple inches.”

Matt Jernstad threw seven innings for the Huskies, leading NIU to a 7-2 win in the series’ finale.

In three games, NIU gave up a total of six earned runs. The Huskies haven’t started off 3-0 in MAC play since 2003 and haven’t swept a MAC opponent since 2004.
