Open house puts Greek philanthropy on display

DeKALB | Greeks from every chapter of every council will showcase their philanthropy and fundraisers on Wednesday at the Chick Evans Field House from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Representatives from each Greek council and SA senators from the Greek Committee have worked since November to coordinate the event. After gaining the support of assistant director of Greek Affairs Melissa Williams, the representatives encouraged Greek council executives to get involved with the expo. Tasks such as contacting food vendors for donations and booking a DJ were divided among the committee members.

The expo is an effort to unite the four Greek councils, the College Panhellenic Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, the Interfraternity Council and the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and help their spring recruitment process.

Chapters are allowed to hold informal recruitment parties throughout the entire semester.

“The expo will give students that are not Greek the chance to see the benefits of joining a chapter, as well as give them the opportunity to view all the chapters in every council to see where they would have the best experience,” said Colleen Murphy, a junior communication major and chairman of the Campus Life and Greek Affairs Committee.

Students can talk to chapter members about Greek life, browse display tables, gather information, enjoy the free food, listen to the disc jockey and enter in a raffle for free giveaways, such as T-shirts.

Display tables will show the different types of community service chapters are involved in and the university events chapters regularly participate in.

“With an open atmosphere of the expo, students can find how going Greek could be beneficial to them,” said Dan Leonard, director of Greek Affairs.
