Ranked teams too strong for Huskies

DeKALB | NIU gymnastics fell to two ranked teams Sunday.

The Huskies, with a score of 191.225, finished behind No. 10 Iowa State and No. 24 Illinois.

“We had a couple of misses on the floor and beam, but we had three gymnasts who stepped in to compete for the first time this year,” head coach Mark Sontag said. “We continue to battle through injury and adversity.”

Jennifer Naughton posted the highest score for NIU, tying for fourth on the vault with a score of 9.850.

Amber Whitecotton’s 9.800 and Natalie Blum’s 9.750 added to Naughton’s score to post a season-high on the vault.

Meghan Cronin posted the highest uneven parallel bars for NIU for the second straight meet, finishing tied for fifth with a score of 9.750.

Leah Johnson did not compete in the meet due to injury.

Plenty in the top ten for track and field

After qualifying fifth for the finals, Lorene Skipper improved her 800-meter dash time by nearly three-tenths of a second to finish third in the women’s track and field MAC Indoor Championships, which took place Friday and Saturday.

Skipper also competed in the 4×400 relay, which finished fifth.

Other Huskies who had top-ten finishes include Meghan Ginter, who placed eighth in the 5000-meter run; Jessica Statler, who finished sixth in the high jump; and Meagan Guenther, who finished eighth in the weight throw.

As a team, NIU finished 10th out of 12 teams.

Women’s tennis splits weekend

The NIU women’s tennis team had its weekend shortened due to weather, but not before a victory.

Marquette dominated the Huskies on Friday, winning every single and doubles match.

NIU rebounded on Saturday by defeating Connecticut 4-1.

NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell switched the doubles match-ups before the match, which proved to be the right move as the Huskies swept UConn in doubles.

“I have some questions that need to be answered,” Ferrell said. “The only way those questions can be answered is to switch it up and see what happens.”

The Huskies went on to win four of six singles matches to take the victory.

“I think we have our doubles line-up,” Ferrell said. “Today I was pleased with the results.”
