Huskies looking to declaw the Jags

DeKALB | After just two days rest, the NIU women’s basketball team is back in action tonight when it takes on Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.

The game will be the third of a four-game home stand for NIU.

The Huskies are coming off a 97-69 blow-out win against Illinois State on Saturday. In that game NIU had four players score in double digits.

So far this season, NIU guard Stephanie Raymond leads the team in scoring averaging with 23.5 points per game.

“We played really well last game, but we still have to be grounded,” head coach Carol Owens said. “This team is very athletic and it’s going to take an overall effort from our team.”

NIU will have their hands full guarding Jaguars forward Jernisha Cann.

The sophomore led her team with 16 points and 13 rebounds in a 69-63 loss to the Ohio Legends back on Nov. 5.

Coach Owens said she knows how good Cann is and her game will not be taken lightly.

“She is a great athlete,” Owens said. “Our post defense has to step up this game and the team defense will be the key.”

With Cann being the leader of the front court for the Jaguars, the Huskies expect junior forward Whitney Lowe and Kristin Wiener to continue their solid play.

Lowe scored 20 points Saturday, knocking down four three pointers. Wiener scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

“We’re going to try to continue the balance we had last game,” Owens said.
