Wolfe out of rhythm in last two games

By Lacy Searcy

DeKALB | NIU tailback Garrett Wolfe can’t seem to find his rhythm anymore.

Wolfe rushed for 45 yards against Temple’s No. 117 defense, and to make matters worse, two weeks ago he rushed for 27 yards against Western Michigan.

Wolfe is the same player who broke the all-time NCAA rushing record with 1,181 yards in less than six games.

Despite his uncharacteristic numbers, Wolfe still leads the nation in rushing by 232 yards with 1,413.

Sacks for Larry

Last year he had two sacks. This year, NIU defensive end Larry English already has more than seven.

English is ranked second in the MAC with 7.5 sacks. The junior is on pace to rack up more than 10 sacks for the year.

On Saturday, English broke an NIU record for sacks in a game with 4.5 against Temple. Four of the sacks came before halftime.

Britt Davis back in form

Two weeks ago NIU wide receiver Britt Davis didn’t have a single touchdown. Now he has two. The junior is also the leading receiver on the team with 402 yards and 33 receptions.

Davis averaged 19.1 yards per game his first four games.

Over his last four, Davis’ average increased to 81.9 yards per game.

Rush defense

The NIU football team’s run defense is much-improved this season.

Last year the Huskies gave up 147.9 yards per game.

This season the Huskies have given up 106.4 rushing yards, which ranks them No. 30 in the nation and second in the MAC behind Western Michigan.

Linebacker’s frenzy

A weakness before the season has been transformed into a strength.

NIU linebackers Tim McCarthy (63 tackles), Cory Hanson (39 tackles) and Keenan Blalark (67 tackles) have been all over the field this year.

Those three players have accounted for 34 percent of the team’s tackles.
