Sigma Nu tries for comeback at NIU

DeKALB | Chris Wetterman, an expansion and recruitment consultant for Sigma Nu, is on campus this semester to take part in the national efforts of the fraternity.

Sigma Nu, an international social and honor fraternity, was founded at the Virginia Military Institute in 1869 on anti-hazing ideology and honor code principles.

The university’s Sigma Nu charter was first established in 1970. However, due to financial matters and low membership, the fraternity was disbanded in 1996.

Wetterman is one of 10 alumni volunteers at the university from various Sigma Nu chapters in the Midwest looking to restore the Sigma Nu fraternity. This guiding board of volunteer alumni plans to work with executive officers of Sigma Nu, while the fraternity constructs terms and conditions.

“There are over 2,500 Sigma Nu alumni in the Chicagoland area,” he said. “We are a part of the national Sigma Nu efforts to give individuals a full fraternity experience.”

One of Sigma Nu’s principle goals is to create the “leaders of tomorrow.” Wetterman says Sigma Nu is unique because it has a new-member education program called LEAD (Leadership, Ethics, Achievement and Development).

The LEAD program starts thefirst day of membership and continues until college graduation.

Sigma Nu plans to have a fraternity house available as soon as the 2007-2008 academic year.
