Speaking plain English

Larry English’s first game as a true freshman became his last of 2004.

After getting four tackles against No. 22 Maryland in NIU’s first game that fall, English was out the rest of the year with a high ankle sprain.

The 6-foot-3 end returned in 2005 to lead the defensive line with 57 tackles and record two sacks.

After English registered the Huskies’ first sack of 2006 against Buffalo on the first play of the game Saturday, the defensive end declared the frustration was over.

Northern Star: Describe the first play of the game against Buffalo.

Larry English: In the back of my head I knew this game was where we had to get those sacks. I got a good rush off the edge, and there was good coverage that gave me the extra seconds we’ve needed the last two weeks.

NS: Why did it take the defense so long to get that first sack?

LE: There’s no real reason. It’s always something we’re working on and strive for. But this week there was that added frustration of having to get that first sack.

NS: Heading into 2005, did you expect to have such a good season?

LE: It wasn’t much of a surprise. The coaches told me they were counting on me, but the sack category was somewhat disappointing.

NS: What was your highlight play last season?

LE: It was a third down sack against Tennessee Tech. Everyone was depending on us to get the offense back on the field.

NS: Craig Rusch was NIU’s sack leader last year and will return this week from injury. How big is it to have him back?

LE: It’s a big deal. He’s a great player who makes big plays. And any play maker we can have out there helps the team.

NS: You and Craig are sophomores now. Can you become one of the best defensive end tandems ever at NIU, or even in the MAC?

LE: We definitely think we can. It’s something we have to take game by game, and concentrate on getting better. But it’s not something we want to worry about right now. Right now we have to worry about winning.

NS: Why did you choose No. 51?

LE: Honestly, I didn’t. It was picked for me when I got to my locker. I wore No. 45, but I like 51 now.

NS: How did your family get your replica jersey with the name on it?

LE: They went through the VCB. My mom got on it last year. It was a big deal for her when she got it.

NS: Can I have one?

LE: [Laughs] I’m sure we can get you one.
