Otto’s to host blues legend

By Evan Thorne

DeKALB | Legendary bluesman Johnny Winter will play Otto’s Niteclub, 118 E. Lincoln Highway, Saturday. The guitarist has more than three decades of experience and more than 20 albums to his credit, including his most recent, Grammy-nominated outing, “I’m A Bluesman.”

The 9:00 p.m. show is 21-and-over and tickets are available in advance for $15 or at the door for $20.

Winter began his professional recording career at 24 and has released such classic albums as “Second Winter” and “Still Alive and Well.” He has been known to share the stage and the studio with luminaries like Muddy Waters and BB King, lending his scorching rock-based take on classic blues to the mix.

Winter’s younger brother, pianist Edgar Winter, was thrust into the public eye with the Edgar Winter Group’s hit “Free Ride,” but Johnny is the brother who commands the most respect in blues circles. The two have played in bands together since their pre-teen years, but currently pursue separate careers.

Blues rockers Voodoo Pilot are slated to open the show. The quintet has played around Illinois for almost six years and have shared the stage with acts like Molly Hatchet, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Wishbone Ash.
