Response

As chair and secretary of NIU Libraries Exhibits Committee, we would like to respond to the editorial in the September 16 issue of the Northern Star.

It is the policy of the Exhibits Committee that the “…exhibit[s] must not impede research or regular library use.” In fact, a student approached the circulation desk requesting materials from the exhibit and was able to check out the three books needed.

The editorial also states that a “good number of items have mysteriously disappeared.” Unfortunately, this is true of books on other popular topics. It is also true that there are library patrons who rip articles from journals rather than part with a few dimes to copy the article.

Until all library patrons learn to respect their fellow patrons’ rights to equal access to library materials, these materials will continue to “mysteriously disappear.”
