Residence Hall Association elections set for Saturday

Residence Hall Association elections will take place Saturday in the Stevenson Towers South Smart Classroom. The elections determine positions for the 2006-07 school year.

“Members of the respective hall councils vote after hearing speeches from the candidates during a three week process,” said RHA President Daniel Chou.

RHA works with Housing and Dining and the NIU administration to implement changes students would like to see in the residence hall setting.

Residents are encouraged to elect officers who will represent them and the elections are very important in that the officers are the students’ voices for change, Chou said.

Hall Council meetings are good places to meet the candidates and get to know their positions. However, not all residents attend these meetings, which may affect the voting turnout.

“I don’t know anything about [the elections], so I don’t want to vote for something I’m not supportive of,” said Mike Rios, a sophomore sociology major.

Nevertheless, Chou encourages students to get involved.

“The direction in which RHA will go next year will be determined by the officers elected,” Chou said. “While our mission stays the same, how we achieve that mission is up to the newly elected Executive Board.”
