Diabetics needed for study

By Andrew Karolus

Research subjects are needed for a Type II diabetes study, run by Theresa Schultz, an NIU researcher and nutrition and dietetics instructor.

The study will investigate the effects of dietary supplements on Type II diabetes sufferers.

Glucorell Inc. will provide the supplement, a product called Insulow, which has been thoroughly tested in Europe. In those tests, many patients saw great improvements in balancing their blood sugar levels, so well that many didn’t need other diabetes medications any longer.

Schultz also is looking for research for further generations with this study.

“If it works, it will show diabetes begins within the cell, so if we concentrate on that, then we have a good chance and a good place to look [for the future],” Schultz said. “Science is based on what previous people have done.”

Volunteers wishing to participate in this study must be Type II diabetics ages 21 to 65, non-smokers and otherwise in good health.

A double-blind system will be in place, where the participants will take a dietary supplement or a placebo. Participants are not required to give up their current diabetic medication and dietary regime for this study.

The study will take place Saturday and May 6 in DuSable Hall at the Clinic Lab.
