Huskies take 14th place at W. Virginia

West Virginia was the site of the Marshall Invitational golf tournament last weekend.

But the NIU men’s golf team didn’t take its A game with it. The Huskies placed 14th at the tournament out of 15 teams.

“Everybody struggled in the morning round,” NIU head coach John Cleary said. “We got off to a bad start and didn’t finish the morning round well. We took some big numbers. [Sophomore] Jared [Steger] was the lone bright spot. He played solid. We were able to turn it around in the afternoon where everybody improved. We just have to keep improving and keep getting better.”

Wright State was the only school that the Huskies finished ahead of. The Huskies finished 27 stokes behind MAC rival Eastern Michigan, which took the title.

The Huskies will have two weeks to get their stroke back, as they visit Akron to play in the Firestone Intercollegiate on April 29.

After that will be the MAC championships for the Huskies, which begin May 4.

One final tune-up

After coming off a 14th place performance at the Northwestern Invitational in California last week, the NIU women’s golf team will visit Urbana on Friday to play in the Lady Illini Invitational. This will be the Huskies last tournament of the season. The Huskies begin their MAC tournament April 28 at Hamilton, Ohio.

Troubles on the court

The struggles have continued for the NIU men’s tennis team. Its 7-0 loss to Western Michigan on the road last Saturday brings the Huskies to 1-4 in their last five matches.

The Huskies will play their next four matches at home. After that, the MAC championships begin April 27 in Toledo, Ohio.

Off cloud nine

The NIU women’s tennis team has had trouble getting back on the winning track.

The Huskies have dropped nine-straight matches. During this nine-game slide, the Huskies have been shut-out four times.

The teams last win came more than a month ago on Feb. 25 when it defeated South Dakota State.
