‘Big Baby’ hungry for title

By Nathan Lindquist

In a year when upperclassmen like J.J. Redick and Adam Morrison dominated the headlines, youth is being served at the Final Four.

The Twin Towers of Glen Davis and Tyrus Thomas almost single handedly brought LSU to its first Final Four since 1986 and become more of a household name every game they play.

The baby Tigers are led by sophomore Glen “Big Baby” Davis, the reigning SEC Player of the Year. One look at the fabulously flabby Davis, who stands 6-foot-9 and 310 pounds, and one would think he got lost on his way to the crawfish eating contest. But his domination of the boards is astounding, highlighted by rebounding his own missed free throw over four Duke defenders.

Darrel Mitchell is the lone senior on a team of freshmen and sophomores, and his leadership and 17 points per game have been invaluable.

The Final Four makes stars, and redshirt freshman Tyrus Thomas is one of them. At 6-foot-9, Thomas can jump out of the gym and has changed or blocked any shots that come his way. The scariest part is his offensive game is rounding into shape, making him a sure lottery pick soon.

As a team, the Tigers could not be hotter. During the tournament, they have limited opponents to 58 ppg on 34-percent shooting. Most impressively, their defensive pressure harassed Redick into 3 of 18 shooting.

As long as Thomas doesn’t pull a hamstring and “I’m Gonna Eat Your Baby” Davis doesn’t pass out at the buffet line, LSU will come out on top in Indianapolis.
