Max Keding was arraigned Thursday morning in the shooting death of Jayson Martin after being charged with first degree murder Wednesday.

Keding, 15, of DeKalb also was charged with three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a firearm without firearm owners ID card. He will be tried as an adult for all charges.

The bond was set at $1 million. Keding was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles for the duration of the trial, according to Joe Cullen, first assistant state’s attorney.

“There’s no way of telling how long this trial will last,” Cullen said. “This trial can last for one or two years.”

DeKalb police said both Martin and Keding were affiliated with gangs and the shooting was gang related.

Martin has a criminal record in DeKalb and was charged with two counts of criminal damage to property in 2003.

Martin also had an active warrant out for his arrest which was obtained Tuesday for failure to appear in court for criminal damage to property.

DeKalb police would not comment on Keding’s criminal record because he is a juvenile.

Attempts to contact Martin and Keding’s families were unsuccessful.
