Huskies put on hit parade

In the three-game series against Ohio last weekend, the NIU baseball team posted 50 hits, the highest three-game total under head coach Ed Mathey.

Junior first baseman Scott Simon led the way and moved up to No. 3 on NIU baseball’s career hit list.

Simon went 11-16 on the weekend with seven RBIs and seven runs scored and was named MAC West Player of the Week for the second time this year.

“The guys swung the bats well,” Mathey said. “They were working into good hitters’ counts and looking for pitches to drive. That combo usually works well.”

The previous high mark under Mathey had been 39 hits in a three-game series against Bowling Green in April 2004.

A little less reliefJunior reliever Matt German ended his scoreless streak against Bradley after he gave up one earned run in one inning.

German has given up one run in 24 innings this season.

Streak busterAfter extending his hit streak to 11 games in Game 1 against Bradley Tuesday, Jesse Seykora ended his streak with 0-for-3 effort in Game 1.

Career game for FeeneySophomore pitcher Trevor Feeney collected his second win of the season, totaling a career-high seven strikeouts.

The performance nearly reached the sophomore’s strikeout total for last season. Feeney had 11 strikeouts in 15.2 innings last year.

Hagemann puts it all togetherSophomore softball pitcher Taryn Hagemann earned her fifth victory of the season Saturday with a complete game.

After starting the season 0-5, the sophomore has won five of her last six games.

“She learned a lot last year,” head coach Donna Martin said. “She’s now able to apply the things she learned.”

Last season, Hagemann had one win in 12 appearances on the mound.

Jamrozy goes yardSenior Elyse Jamrozy hit her third home run of the season in Saturday’s win.

The blast in the first inning in the game against Butler gave the catcher the lead on the team.

The power output comes as no surprise; last season Jamrozy was second on the team with six home runs.
