At approximately 7:30 Tuesday night, police responded to a report of shots fired at an abandoned storefront on Seventh Street between Locust and Oak streets.

Jayson Martin, 19, of DeKalb, was pronounced dead at Kishwaukee Community Hospital at 8:04 p.m due to wounds sustained from a gunshot.

“It appears to be a running disagreement between a couple of groups. Indications are that it’s gang-related, Latin Kings and Gangster Disciples,” said DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen.

Police have a suspect, but as of press time, he was not in custody.

“We do not consider him a flight risk,” Feithen said.

The city’s last homicide was four years ago, Feithen said.

There were 27 reported shooting incidents in 2005, 14 in 2004 and 16 in 2003, according to the DeKalb Police Department’s annual reports.

As part of the DeKalb County Major Case Squad, the following agencies are working to solve the incident: DeKalb Police Department, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, Sycamore Police Department, the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Further information will be available in Thursday’s Northern Star.
