The main event: WrestleMania XXII

The road to WrestleMania XXII in Chicago is nearly complete. With only a month remaining until professional wrestling’s “biggest night,” the questions on the minds of most wrestling fans continues to focus on who will be facing who and who will be in the main event.

At this point, the main event between the two representatives from SmackDown is still unclear. Typically, the winner of the Royal Rumble goes on to face the World Heavyweight Champion. Rey Mysterio Jr., the winner of the Royal Rumble, recently lost his right to face the current World Heavyweight Champion, Kurt Angle, in a match with Randy Orton.

The main event between the two representatives from Raw was made clear after this week’s Raw. John Cena, the current WWE Champion, will defend his newly won title against Triple H. Regardless of the outcome between John Cena and Triple H at WrestleMania, the feud is expected to go on for at least the next three months, with a likely rematch taking place at the Backlash Pay-Per-View in late April.

Other matches that are expected to take place include a match between the rated “R” superstar, Edge, and hardcore legend, Mick Foley. Trish Stratus is also expected to continue her feud with Mickey James. Finally, could it be possible? Will we see The Rockers against the McMahons? Honestly, who cares?

Overall, the card for WrestleMania XXII is shaping up to be one of the worst cards since WrestleMania XV. The WWE has thrown this card together far too late for most people to care. The WWE has, give or take a few days, one month to make people want to buy a $50 Pay-Per-View that, frankly, hasn’t been very good in past years.

In the absence of the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, the WWE still doesn’t have a star that can help sell WrestleMania as the huge event that it has been in previous years. And to clear a few things up, the solution to this problem is not signing Hulk Hogan for one match so people can watch him punch someone seventy-five times. Nor is it a solution to plug Bret Hart as being one of the 2006 inductees into the WrestleMania Hall-of-Fame. It’s been nearly ten years since Bret Hart left the WWE, and it’s time to forget him.

It’s time to face the facts here. Wrestling had a glimmer of hope with Edge as the WWE Champion, but in the end, wrestling is nothing more than a backstage political battle in which everyone knows Triple H will inevitably win. In order to make this year’s WrestleMania a successful event, the WWE needs to pull out any and all tricks they have left and use them, or this year’s event will go down in history as the absolute worst.

WrestleMania XXII will take place live from Allstate Arena April 2.
