NIU splits first series

Elyse Jamrozy didn’t wait long to get off to a good start.

Just one swing into her senior season, Jamrozy was watching the ball clear the center field fence.

Jamrozy’s teammates didn’t let her have all the fun as the NIU softball team went 2-2 over the weekend in the Dragon’s Dome Invitational in Pekin.

Despite giving up back-to-back home runs in the first inning against Northern Iowa Friday, the Huskies were able to manufacture just enough runs for a 4-3 comeback win to start off the season on a high note.

The high-energy didn’t carry over into the next morning, however. NIU played tournament host Bradley and wasn’t able to even get on the board. The Braves again jumped on the Huskies early, and when it was all said and done it was 8-0 Bradley.

Four hours later, NIU got to feel what it’s like to shut out an opponent as Lindsey LaChiana improved to 2-0 on the season in the Huskies 5-0 over IUPUI.

NIU got a second chance at Northern Iowa when the two squared off in the game for third place in the tournament.

Northern Iowa repeated its performance in game one; jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Unfortunately for NIU, it was unable to muster another comeback victory. The Huskies only managed three hits and lost 4-1.
