‘Signs’

By Chris Strupp

In his 1999 thriller “The Sixth Sense,” M. Night Shyamalan took audiences to a then-unheard of plateau of creepiness. A few years later, Shyamalan tried to do it again with the road warrior himself, Mel Gibson in “Signs.”

The plot: crop circles appear, a little girl doesn’t drink her water, dogs die and a woman is pinned to a tree. That pretty much sums up the whole thing.

Oh yeah, there are aliens attacking the planet and kill a lot of people, but that doesn’t warrant much attention. Why would it when you could watch a kid have an asthma attack for five minutes?

Shyamalan just doesn’t quite capture the hold-your-breath type of scenes he is known for.

The only saving grace of this film is the performances by the young actors Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin, who bring depth to their characters unlike Joaquin Phoenix and Gibson.

But if you like a predictable ending where you will be sorely disappointed, then rent away.
