Police catch five in tobacco sting

By Andrew Schlesser

The DeKalb Police Department checked local tobacco vendors Wednesday night to make sure they ask for identification before they sell cigarettes.

Of the 15 businesses checked, five did not act in compliance with tobacco laws, Sgt. Jason Leverton said.

“We have done several of these in the past but this is the first tobacco sting we have done this year,” Leverton said.

An agent of the DeKalb Police Department was sent into each business and asked to buy a pack of Newport cigarettes, police said.

The police’s underage agent was 15 years old, Leverton said.

Police issued court dates to the following people for the unlawful sale of tobacco to a minor: Christopher R Quaid, 23, of 1328 N. 13th St. an employee at the Stop N Shop, 708 E. Lincoln Highway; William T. Harb, 51, of Chicago, from Huka Corner Inc., 811 E. Lincoln Highway #B; Pamela S. Gross, 20, of 1305 N. Annie Glidden Road #1126, an employee of Casey’s, 1001 N. Annie Glidden Road; Lynn P. Hickey, 39, of Malta from Hickey’s Corner Store, 218 W. Lincoln Highway; and Sundeep R. Kathapalli, 23, of 832 Ridge Drive #213 from Mobil, 2400 Sycamore Road.

Four of the non-compliant businesses did not ask the agent for identification at all and one business told the agent she did not have to show her ID when she was pulling it out to show it.

Each employee cited for the violation faces up to a $500 fine.

The business involved could also be fined up to $1,000 or face having their tobacco license suspended or revoked.
