Volleyball wins thriller

The Dziubla family reunion may have been the main attraction Tuesday night, but Corinne Walsh stole the show by leading the NIU volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Illinois State.

In front of a rowdy bipartisan crowd of 302, NIU freshman setter Jenny Dziubla and the Huskies (12-13) edged older sister Kristin and the Redbirds (13-8) by two points in each game.

The sub-plot of the evening at Victor E. Court was the first collegiate meeting between Jenny Dziubla and her sister Kristin Dziubla, a sophomore middle blocker for ISU. Kristin totaled 14 kills on 31 attempts while Jenny handed out 49 assists along with five kills of her own.

Game 1 was dominated by ISU as the Huskies only managed nine kills and seven errors to drop a 30-22 decision.

The Huskies offense awoke in Game 2 but mental errors on offensive attacks turned a 23-18 lead into a 29-30 deficit. A kill by junior middle blocker Kate McCullagh and two ISU attack errors handed the Huskies a 32-30 victory.

Long rallies and impressive defensive digging by both teams marked Game 3, which NIU pulled out again in a 31-29 squeaker.

Game 4 looked to be out of the Huskies’ reach as ISU seemingly had the game in hand with game point at 29-24. But a fierce Huskie rally spurred by four clutch kills by Walsh electrified the crowd and the Huskies used the momentum to finish the match by a 34-32 score.

“I was just focusing on winning the game and ignoring what the score is,” said Walsh, who led the team with 19 kills and 10 in the final game. “It is a good momentum match going into the weekend so now we can look forward to beating Ball State and Toledo.”
