Five-month-old Elisa Elmazi died Tuesday from head injuries caused by the Oct. 23 car collision between a black BMW and a beige Ford Windstar.

Elmazi was in the BMW and properly seated in a car seat, said Chief Deputy Kevin Hickey of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

All eight people involved in the accident were treated in area hospitals for injuries.

Sknloige Elmazi, 24, the mother of the infant, is still in critical condition at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital.

All but one of the Ford occupants have been treated and released, Hickey said.

The Ford was carrying five people, including NIU math professor Zhuan Ye, 47; Allen Ye , 18, 7-year-old Angelin Ye and 4-year-old Anthana Ye. The fifth occupant was Mei Chen , 47, the director of information systems in the NIU engineering department.

The BMW was going northbound on North Annie Glidden Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with the Ford, which was traveling southbound. The roads were slippery and a hill was in the direction the Ford was coming from.

Police said the accident may have been caused by a combination of bad weather and speeding.

Hickey said the investigation is ongoing.

“We are taking a wait-and-see attitude because of the injuries,” he said.
