Student groups get ready to Yell-Like-Hell

More than 13 organizations will compete in the 21st annual Yell-Like-Hell event at 7 p.m. tonight at the Convocation Center.

Each group, which can have up to 20 people on the floor, will perform a cheer routine.

Routines will be judged based on seven criteria. These factors include how loud the cheer is, effectiveness of motions and jumps, difficulty, creativity, originality, NIU spirit and overall effect.

Judges will pick the top three teams that followed these guidelines the best.

Deep Rooprai, concept designer and assistant vice president of Yell-Like-Hell, said the teams that place in the top three will get points added on to their overall score. The organization with the most overall points throughout the week will get its name on a plaque that hangs in the Holmes Student Center.

More then 1,500 people are expected to attend the event, Rooprai said. Among those expected to attend include the NIU football team and the Homecoming royalty. The event is free for NIU students.

Some students like junior sociology major Shawn Andrews are excited about the event.

“I am excited because the whole Greek community will be a part of the this,” Andrews said.

This is one of the largest events during Homecoming week, Rooprai said.

“It gets better every year,” she said.
