Co-Rec volleyball kicks off next week

Intramural Sports’ two-game elimination Co-Rec Volleyball Tournament begins play next week.

All games will be played at the Campus Recreation Center Oct. 10 -13.

Any NIU student or faculty member is allowed to watch the games without charge.

There are two different leagues in the tournament – Highly Competitive and Competitive. In total, 24 teams will participate in the tourney. Each league is split up by teams. The Highly Competitive league has 8 teams, leaving 16 teams in the Competitive bracket.

Tim King, assistant coordinator of intramural sports, said teams only can have 12 players on each roster.

A team may start with only 4 players, but can not play with less than that number.

Teams must consist of nearly an even amount of men and women. One gender can not outnumber the other by more than one.

Matches consist of a best-of-three-game series. The first team to win two out of three games to 25 points wins the match. All games will use rally scoring.

There is a 40 minute time limit to complete each match.

The winner of the tournament will get T-shirts and a team picture on the wall at the Rec.

James Madai, captain of the Underdogz, feels confident about his team’s chances of winning.

“I play for the NIU volleyball club team,” said Madai. “My team won the volleyball tournament the past couple of years. Someone will just have to dethrone us.”
