Northern Star helps relief effort

By Derek Wright

Hurricane Katrina relief efforts have sprung up in droves since the deadly storm hit Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana last week.

Several DeKalb merchants and other northwest Illinois businesses have organized both food and clothing drives.

Following suit, a unified effort at NIU by Student Affairs – in particular the Northern Star and Student Involvement and Housing and Dining – will accept donations at locations around campus today through Friday.

All funds will be given to the American Red Cross’ Katrina Relief Fund. The suggested donation is $2.

Only cash and checks will be accepted, and all payments must be payable to NIU. Receipts will be provided if requested.

The 11 collection points include the Holmes Student Center, DuSable and Barsema halls and the Star’s office in the Campus Life Building, Suite 130. Additionally, donations can be made at the dining halls in Lincoln, Douglas, Grant North and South and Neptune halls, the Stevenson food court and the Trident in Neptune.
