Contest offers GMAC scholarship

Students have a chance to win a Saturn and a $1,000 scholarship if they participate in the General Motors Acceptance Corporation contest.

Registration runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the King Memorial Commons for a chance to be chosen for the prizes, said Julie Harris, assistant director of alumni relations.

The prizes will be given out at Wednesday’s NIU football game against Miami-Ohio.

The first 500 students registered for the contest into the stadium will receive T-shirts and wristbands for participating.

At halftime, five students will be chosen out of the crowd of 500 to compete in a game in which one person will win the scholarship money, Harris said. They then will have a chance to be entered in a drawing to win a free trip to Mobile, Ala., where the GMAC Bowl will take place.

When the bowl game begins, the student who won has a chance to win a 2007 Saturn Sky roadster.

The contest has been sponsored by GMAC and partner Carlson Marketing for five years, Carlson Marketing assistant Debbie Moosekian said.

“The contest is only for schools in the Mid-American conference, Western Athletic conference and C-USA because they’re the only schools that qualify to play in the bowl game,” Moosekian said.

Only students in these 33 conference schools can enter the contest.

Some students already thought about entering the contest.

“I want to represent my school, have fun and help out,” said Alicia Galvicius, a junior family social services major.

This method is a good way to promote the bowl game and give schools some extra charity for their students, she said.

The scholarship money the student receives goes straight to their school student account.
