Garage sale being held at Wal-Mart

Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County (formerly Kishwaukee Valley Habitat for Humanity) will hold its annual garage sale this weekend in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 2300 Sycamore Road.

The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The annual garage sale raises funds to aid in the building of simple, decent, affordable homes in DeKalb County and is the largest fundraiser that the organization holds each year.

The NIU community is invited to be a part of this Habitat fundraising effort in three ways:

1. Contribute clean, usable items for the sale.

2. Deliver items to the Wal-Mart parking lot, beginning at noon on the 18th and through the weekend.

3. Donate to Habitat for Humanity by “buying” things that you need at the sale.

Having the garage sale held on NIU’s move-in weekend allows students the opportunity to browse the selection of donated items in the hope they find items to help ready their residence hall or apartment for the school year as well as provide clothing they didn’t want to bring with them from home.

All items given to the cause are donated from individuals who have cleaned out their closets and homes. Most items are not priced and are paid for on a donation basis . We do price some of the larger items, however. This year we are hoping to have some silent auction items as well as a car which you can bid on via a silent auction process.

Established in 1998, the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate, like the international organization, is a not-for-profit ministry committed to eliminating poverty and homelessness.
