Stargazing with fish, mermaid

By Rachel Gorr

Ever wish you could lay in bed every night, gazing up at the stars?

For three girls in Douglas A, that’s exactly what they get to do.

Lisa Gianpetro, a sophomore pre-elementary education major, Jacklyn Trznadel, a sophomore pre-elementary education major, and Ingrid Brand, a sophomore family and individual development major, have all known each other since grade school. When they decided to room together this year, they wanted to do something special.

“We were really excited to live together so we really wanted [our room] to look nice,” Trznadel said.

The theme the girls came up with features oodles of glow-in-the-dark stars, beads, ribbon and funky lights.

“We all went shopping one day over the summer for all the stuff to decorate our room with,” she said.

Adorning the walls and bed frame of the room is a montage of photographs the girls have taken over the years.

“They’re just shots of us with our friends and pictures that make us laugh,” Trznadel said.

The girls’ mission is to completely cover the walls in pictures, as part of their war on blank space.

“We really don’t like white space,” Gianpetro said. “We want to have more pictures by the time we’re done.”

Until the pictures are developed, the girls add ambiance to their pad with tons of fun, decorative lighting.

“I brought most of the lights,” Trznadel said. “I had them in my room last year; my roommate really wasn’t into decorating, though. I think they show off my personality because they’re fun.”

Making an even bigger splash in the room than the water lamp is the girls’ unofficial fourth roommate, Napoleon the Beta fish.

Napoleon, who according to Gianpetro is known to get a little raucous, belongs to Brand but has been adopted by all of the roommates.

“I had him last year, too,” Brand said. “This is his second year at Northern, but he does have a new girlfriend this year. She’s a little blond mermaid in the middle of his bowl. He was lonely before.”

So far, all four roommates have been getting along and are having a good time enjoying their room.

“I love [the room],” Brand said. “It’s comfortable and it feels like we’re at home.”
