Alumni Center on schedule to open in fall

Eight months after ground was first broke, the Barsema Alumni and Visitor’s Center is well on schedule.

The project, which began construction in October, is set to open in time for the Oct. 15 Homecoming celebrations.

Project superintendent Russ Farrar said the main electrical and mechanical parts are almost done.

Foreman Mike Harriss of Elliott & Wood, Inc. said the underground plumbing and water systems have been installed.

“As far as our part, we’re just about 90 percent complete,” Harriss said.

The $6.2 million building has not experienced budget changes, Farrar said.

“We do have some scheduling challenges with materials coming from overseas,” Farrar says.

These materials include flooring and stone.

Farrar said construction fell behind schedule during the winter, but the spring has been a productive season and has helped construction get back on schedule.

Located at the intersection of Annie Glidden Road and Stadium Drive, the building will house a faculty library, a ballroom and a board room.

The adjacent parking lot will be resurfaced.

Farrar said there have not been any traffic problems or problems with pedestrians.

“Overall, it’s been incident-free,” Farrar said.
