Board members sworn in

Newly elected District 428 School Board members got their first taste of action Tuesday night.

Mike Verbic and Jennifer Hayes were sworn in as new board members and re-elected board member Andy Small also was sworn in.

The board held elections for new board officers. Small, Tom Teresinski and Holly Wallace were elected president, vice president and secretary, respectively.

All the votes were unanimous except for president. Board member Tia Robinson voted against Small.

There was no discussion during the meeting, and Robinson declined to comment about her vote after the meeting.

In other action, the board voted 6-0 to enter into a four-year agreement with Energy Education, a Texas-based energy conservation firm, at a total cost of $297,600.

The company helps school districts throughout the country lower energy consumption.

“The school district can expect to see a savings of 15 to 30 percent in energy cost,” said Glenn Gaines, president of the Mid America division for Energy Education.

The company will give a refund to the school district if it does not see a reduction in cost equal to the cost of the consulting firm, he said.

Gaines estimated District 428 would save $1.3 million over the next seven years.

Small, along with the other board members, supported the agreement.

“The is a win-win situation for the school district,” Small said. “They do not get paid unless there are savings that [are] documented by a third party.”

The money the school district saves will be returned to the fund that helps maintain the school district, Small said.

The board also voted 6-0 to sell four buses that were obtained as a result of the merger with the Malta district.

In other school board business, the board voted 6-0 to enter into a contract with Focus Environmental Contractors, LLC, of Brookfield, for the total sum of $6,800.

The contract is to remove the asbestos floor tile at Malta Elementary School. The construction will take place during the summer.

The board also voted 6-0 to enter into a two-year lease with Jim’s Mobile Offices for $18,000. The lease will be for one mobile classroom.

The next school board meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 3 at the District 428 Education Center, 901 S. Fourth St.
