Safe Passage helps unite chocoholics

Safe Passage is inviting chocolate lovers-or those just looking-to have fun at their second Evening of Chocolate Saturday night.

“People can come out and eat as much chocolate as their stomachs can handle for just $10 per student,” said Cynthia Folgate, Safe Passage community events coordinator.

The proceeds from the fund-raiser will go to their client services and a plan for Safe Passage to move into a bigger building where they can expand their services, Folgate said. The services will provide the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with shelter, food and virtually everything they need to live.

Although raising awareness of the organization is a top priority, staff members also want to make the event something that everyone will enjoy.

“When many people think of sexual assault and domestic violence, they always think of it as a sad and depressing thing,” Folgate said. “Though it is a serious issue, we wanted to do something where people can have fun.”

The event will also include various activities, such as a cooking contest, a silent auction and chocolate tasting.

Thirty community leaders will judge in the cooking contest, including Sycamore Mayor John Swedberg, DeKalb Mayor Greg Sparrow and State Representative Bob Pritchard, she said.

Items donated to Safe Passage from Barnes & Noble, 2439 Sycamore Road, and Bakers Square, 131 N Annie Glidden Road, will also be auctioned off, she said.

Volunteers have already begun to set up for the evening at South Pointe Centre, 200 Gurler Road, where the event will be held.

“The first time we had this fundraiser in 2003, it was such a success,” Folgate said. “We have already scheduled the next one for 2006.”
