Renovations planned for East Lincoln Highway

A massive multi-decade development project on East Lincoln Highway was revealed to the public with mixed reviews Wednesday.

The DeKalb Plan Commission met with Vandewalle and Associates, a Wisconsin-based consulting firm, to review an initial working draft of the plan.

The plan calls for major development at the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Peace Road, including acquiring and redeveloping much of the single-family homes near Dodge Avenue and Lincoln Highway.

The plan also included turning the Union Pacific Rail Depot, 200 N. Sixth St., into a museum or restaurant.

Owners of the Fargo Theatre building, 621-649 E. Lincoln Highway were open to suggestions for redevelopment.

Jim Worrell, owner of land on Peace Road and Lincoln Highway, said he was pulled on both sides by the prospect of having his land developed.

“That land has been in my family before DeKalb was even a city,” Worrell said. “But they are doing a good thing by trying to have an integrated plan.”

DeKalb resident Michel Welsh said he wonders if the city is considering enough options about how to alleviate traffic in the city.

“There are 80 trains a day going over our tracks,” he said. “We could use an over/under pass in this neighborhood. If we do not change our traffic patterns, we could really miss the boat on this one.”

The plan will be available for public comments at later commission meetings.

“This is a massive project that will have many more opportunities for public input,” said plan chair Rich Fassig.

The next plan commission meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
