Board OKs agenda

In a rapid succession of votes, the DeKalb County Board approved a number of resolutions Wednesday night.

The board approved, by a 13-8 voice vote, the 2005 legislative agenda.

The agenda includes items on farmland preservation, population-based property tax caps, state funding for building jails and city-paid jail medical care.

Board Vice Chairman Dennis Sands said he was opposed to a number of the agenda items discussed because they called for tax increases.

The population-based property tax caps will use the 1980 census instead of the 1990 census, Sands said.

“They are asking for increased taxes; I am against that,” Sands said.

Sands also opposed the jail medical costs provision of the new agenda.

The agenda states that cities should be required to share the cost of medical care for inmates at the county jail.

“The cities already pay taxes,” Sands said. “To ask them to pay more is unfair.”

The annual request for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department to provide help with traffic flow at the MS150 bicycle tour was again brought before the board.

“Neither of these involve any county money,” said District 10 board member Patricia Lavigne, who moved to approve the resolution.

The board approved the resolution unanimously.

The board also cleared up some unpaid debts.

Outstanding claims for December 2004 and January 2005, totaling about $5.7 million, were paid.

The DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, comprised of all county board members, approved the purchase of a skid steer loader.

Three bids were received for the machinery, said Julia Fauci, 9th district board member. The highest bid was $17,470 from CSR Bobcat, 1805 E. Lincoln Highway.
