Aviation company grounds city contract

R & M Aviation Inc., responsible for operations and management of DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport, has pulled out of their contract with the city with about a year and a half left contractually.

DeKalb City Manager Mark Biernacki announced the move late Tuesday afternoon.

Biernacki would not say why R & M terminated the contract, or what the repercussions of the break would be.

“We are presently exploring our options for dealing with R & M Aviation,” Biernacki said. R & M was contracted to handle operations of the airport until April 2006.

The city has suspended some airport operations, including sales, repair, plane towing and charters, but fuel will still be provided at the airport. The city is looking to find a replacement company within 30 days.

City staff and part-time workers will man the airport until an interim company can be found, Biernacki said.

“The airport is still open and operational – flights are still going in and out,” Biernacki said.

The interim operations company likely will be contracted for six months to one year, he said. Beyond that, the city will set up a longer term contract.

Representatives from the DeKalb airport and R & M Aviation were unavailable for comment.
