The Zutons: Who Killed The Zutons (1-1/2 Stars)

By Derek Wright

Ask any psychologist about Nature vs. Nurture and you’ll start a debate. But now, you can argue it with rock critics, too.

Did The Zutons and The Coral independently develop a fondness for ’60s pseudo-garage psychedelia, or did one band influence the other while growing up together?

Either way, The Zutons sound like The Coral – just not as good. Considering The Coral are bratty, know-it-all teens able to rapidly spew out records with one hidden gem among a dozen tracks, The Zutons may want to rethink their friends.

For 3:24, things aren’t so bad. The last minute of “Pressure Point” and the 2:54 of “You Will You Won’t” are the gems.

But the remaining 11 1/2 songs on “Who Killed The Zutons” are a hodgepodge of misdirection that prompts the more fitting question, “Who are The Zutons?” Do they record mock James Bond themes (“Havana Gang Brawl”) without the kitsch or charm of Cousteau, or spooky rock ’n’ roll with Universal Monster-like organs and howling vocals (“Zuton Fever”) that lack the atmosphere of those classictracks?

Regardless, something is missing. And when that thing is being The Coral, you’re in bad shape.
