Horse slaughter not a black and white issue
November 5, 2004
This letter is in response to Chris Strupp’s Thursday Weekender column. It is discouraging to hear that you would change your mind about a subject upon hearing only one side of the issue. You, as many people do, assume horse slaughter is inhumane. The fact is, the method used is approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association and is done so under direct supervision of a USDA veterinarian. The fact is, there are numerous laws and regulations of Illinois and the United States that a slaughter plant must follow regarding the humane transport and handling of animals. The fact is, we are recycling a resource by producing food, et cetera.
The information you refer to is misinformation and you, as a critical reporter, should recognize that!
Cavel International is a resource for thousands of horse owners who freely sell horses to it, a place of employment for 40 workers and a producer of food that generates millions of dollars of foreign trade revenue that is shared with suppliers, employees and horse owners.
One speech passing on misinformation should not be the basis for a column on the subject.
