Early birds eat the worm

Loud music echoed from several local bars that opened earlier than normal to appeal to hungry revelers and early morning risers who were able to make it to Kegs-and-Eggs.

Bar One, 1000 W. Lincoln Highway, and Starbusters, 930 Pappas Drive, opened at 5 a.m. for the event, but Fatty’s, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway didn’t open until 8 a.m.

“It’s kind of a rite of passage – staying up all night and partying, getting a couple hours of sleep or no sleep at all and going for breakfast,” said Bar One bouncer Ryan Zener.

Kegs-and-Eggs is a Homecoming tradition, he said.

At Bar One, a $5 cover charge got patrons in the door where they could enjoy an early morning breakfast of eggs, biscuits and meat.

Many took to solo dancing after they had finished eating.

Music reverberated through the bar as NIU alumnus Daniel Sullivan devoured his scrambled eggs and ham.

“The ham and scrambled eggs are good,” Sullivan yelled over the rhythmic beats of house music.

Molly’s and Bar One are under the same ownership, but Kegs-and-Eggs was only held at Bar One.

Many patrons of Bar One washed down their breakfasts with beer or a Bloody Mary, finishing off a night of partying with breakfast.

“I got up at 6 o’clock [Friday morning],” Sullivan said, “and I’m still up.”

Many patrons came to Kegs-and-Eggs with no sleep at all on Friday night. Others rose early Saturday to partake in the Homecoming events and the Kegs-and-Eggs feast.

“I have got to be honest; I got up early,” senior biology major Greg Wilson said.

The game has everyone excited, Wilson said. NIU football beat Central Michigan Saturday 42-10.

The crowds remained calm at Bar One and the event went quietly, said Zener, who worked his first Kegs-and-Eggs Saturday.

“Even last night [Friday] everyone was having a good time,” he said.

Starbusters charged a $3 cover, bartender Krystal Schmidtlein said. The cover got patrons unlimited eggs but no alcohol, she said.

Starbusters did not have any problems with patrons on Saturday morning, said Schmidtlein.

Lee Delpriore, a senior special education major, celebrated a friend’s birthday at Fatty’s, where there was no charge for a breakfast buffet.

“I never drink that early,” she said.

The light of day did not deter Delpriore or other revelers from enjoying the festivities.

Delpriore, a Kegs-and-Eggs novice, said she enjoyed laughing and goofing off with her friends and would attend again next year.
