Jimmy Eat World: Futures

By Erin Wienke

Jimmy Eat World’s “Futures” proves to be its most well-rounded release – fully showcasing its talents. Mixing indie cred with pop sensibility, the fourth venture bridges gaps which had previously alienated old and new JEW fans.

Seamlessly blending the sounds of “Clarity,” the elitists’ favorite, and “Jimmy Eat World” aka “Bleed American,” Top 40’s gold mine “Futures” displays a healthy balance between radio-worthy and emotional tracks.

“Pain” is the hardest track on the album, snugly located between two softer ballads, “The World You Love” and “Drugs or Me.”

Experimental guitar riffs and overlapping vocals make each track sound full and complete. Frontman Jim Adkins still sings with a trademark waver, but supporting vox sound stronger.

Lyrics have never been Jimmy Eat World’s strong point, but the songs on the newest release transcend usual clichés. Blatantly commenting on issues such as drug addiction, JEW takes an edgier and yet still listener-friendly approach with this new release.

If following releases are as thoroughly involving as this one, then the future looks great for Jimmy Eat World.
