Bigoted columnist shouldn’t be on the staff
October 21, 2004
Now, I really shouldn’t be surprised that Nick Arhos is still spouting off garbage like this. I am, however, surprised the Northern Star still runs it. Arhos is a religious zealot, a conspiracy nut and a bigot. Last year, he wrote articles bashing, among other people, homosexuals, women, African-Americans, Latin Americans, Democrats, non-Christians and probably far more that I am forgetting. He does so under the protection of freedom of speech, so, of course, he has the right to do so. However, if the Star were a respectable newspaper, it would not allow this to continue. Arhos claimed in his latest article that he doesn’t talk about his religion, but anyone who has read his articles knows that is a flagrant lie. Arhos brings Christianity into his articles at every given opportunity. He constantly spouts off half-baked opinions about heroic Republicans protecting Christian rights, or like his latest article, claiming to accept homosexuals while taking the opportunity to remind them that they are ignorant and don’t love God as much as heterosexuals. I realize the opinions page is there to exercise free speech; however, I feel that allowing a bigot and hatemonger like Arhos to have a weekly column is a pathetic attempt to gather readers by using shock value. The Star used to be one of the best school papers around, but it is swiftly falling from this position by employing ignorant people like Nick Arhos. Bigots have no place on a newspaper staff, even on the opinion page.
