Last road hurrah for NIU tennis

Northern Illinois University’s women’s tennis team has their own updated remake of the old Willie Nelson hit. The Huskies’ new version is “On the Road Again—One Last Time.”

The 9-9 Huskies spent the entire month of March away from home and they cap their five-match road trip tomorrow, heading to Normal for a 1 p.m. meeting with Illinois State University. Fortunately for NIU, it is the final trek away from DeKalb in the 1993 campaign.

“I think the players are getting a little weary of the road,” admitted coach Patty Newbrough. “The match with Illinois State should be a good one, though. We’re in-state rivals, and a victory here would give us a great push as we head into our last matches of the year. We need to pick up a couple of strong victories prior to the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament at the end of April.”

Svetlana Nedeljkovic and Brenda Bowen are the sole NIU players entering the weekend with two consecutive victories under their belts. At No. 4 singles, Nedeljkovic downed Iowa State University’s Connie McGough 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Drake University’s Stephanie DeWald, 6-3, 6-3. Bowen’s triumphs came at No. 6 singles where she defeated Khristin Dahlberg of ISU, 6-3, 6-2 and the Bulldogs’ Nicole Gainci 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
