Ghilani to try out for Dallas Cowboys
April 26, 2004
NIU center Todd Ghilani could breathe a sigh of relief Monday after he received an offer to work out with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent.
“My agent didn’t call me until today,” Ghilani said Monday, “so I was waiting all last night for a call. I was 99 percent sure that we were going to get about 15 calls right after the draft if I didn’t get drafted.”
Ghilani said his agent mentioned invitations from other NFL teams, but the 6-foot-4 senior will work out in Dallas this week.
“After they see me, if they like me, they’ll sign me right there,” Ghilani said.
Wide receiver P.J. Fleck and cornerback Randee Drew both received free agent offers from the San Francisco 49ers.
Fleck expects his contract, which was shipped overnight, to arrive today at his home in Sugar Grove.
Fleck and Drew will attend a mini-camp next week, Fleck said.
“We don’t know the details yet, but it’s always nice to go to a new place with someone you know,” Fleck said. “We’ll get to go out there together, and that’s a plus.”
Kicker Steve Azar, Ghilani’s roommate, has not yet received an offer. Ghilani still expects Azar to receive an offer.
“I don’t foresee him having a problem about that,” Ghilani said. “He’ll get a call sooner or later. He’s too good to not be picked up.”
Only three kickers were selected in the draft.
“It’s the nature of the beast,” Ghilani said. “They just don’t draft kickers.”
