Caution: ‘Jaws’ to visit Gabel Pool Sunday

Springfest 1993, in keeping with its theme, “Not Your Ordinary Fish Story,” will be hosting the first “Flick and Float” to help start off this year’s annual event.

Campus Activities Board (CAB) Films will be showing “The Blue Lagoon” and “Jaws” as part of the week’s events from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday at Gabel Pool.

Springfest Coordinator Anne Reuland said that the two movies will be projected on a wall while students float and relax in the pool. “We thought it would be fun to have a bunch of people float around on inner tubes watching movies. It’s a chance to sit back and relax,” she said.

Reuland said the Flick and Float keeps with the theme of Springfest because a lot of the things it is doing has some connection with animals and water.

“The movies were selected by the committee and voted on. We chose ‘Jaws’ because it is scary and ‘The Blue Lagoon’ because it is popular,” Reuland said. “Both connect well with our theme.”

Reuland is hoping for a good turnout this Sunday. “This is something that we have never done before. If it works we’ll probably bring it back next year,” she said.

While students can just lounge around in the pool, they are encouraged to bring inner tubes or other flotation devices, she said. There will be a limited supply of inner tubes available at the pool.

Reuland said violent behavior will not be tolerated. There will be lifeguards on duty and nudity is not acceptable. “All rules of the pool apply so if they don’t accept nudity, then we don’t,” she said.

“The whole week will just be a week of one crazy event after another,” she said. “We’re trying to give people crazy things to do before having to get stressed out by the upcoming final exams. So basically, just put on your suit and come on over and watch movies.”
